Week 4 Post 1 Will

Abbey, that is so sick! Everything looks great thanks to your editing. After I sent my last blog entry I realized that Katie had previously submitted the summary, whoops. I just finished up the one page intro as well.

Week 4 Post 1- Abbey

Guys, we're gonna have absolutely no issue with time. I just edited in our individual segments and just barely managed to clip it down to 8 minutes, and that's without the student interviews and author segments.
It's saving now. Once I finish that, I'll do another version with all the other sources on there. I'll post them both on this blog and let you guys decide which we should present.

In the meantime, here's the summary section!

The song I used is the intrumental for Sunny Hill's "The Grasshopper Song". Sunny Hill is a Korean band, and the song is about the daily struggle people face between working hard and having fun. The music video tells Aesop's fable of the Ant and the Grasshopper, but from the Grasshopper's point of view. You see the ant works hard and gets things done without argument, but he is disappointed with his life. The grasshopper shows him how to live with some freedom and creativity. The song has an interesting sound that fits the Hunger Games well, and I thought the message of rebellion against the set order would match HG also. Here's the mv for it if you're interested, music starts at 0:55-

And here's the actual fanmade instrumental that I'm using!

Week 3 Post 2 Will

I am actually trying to upload my interviews from my phone but have no idea how to. I know you are a technologically advanced Abbey, do you know how to fix this problem? I have a Mac and an iPhone and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Week 3 Post 1 Will

Is there any way you could send me our summary Katie? I'm about to start the other one page intro.

Week 3 Post 2- Abbey

I'm working on putting everything together right now. Could everyone email me their interviews?
You can send it to either broomninja@gmail.com or amcneely@forum. If the file is too big to email, you can use rapidshare.com or mediafire.com and send me the link to download them. Or, you can just wait until our meeting this afternoon and give them to me via flash drive! I just need them by tonight so I can get things taken care of. :)

Week 3 Post 1- Abbey

Hey everyone!
Here's a recap of what we did Thursday.

We started out with a to-do list on a white board. It helped to keep us on track and to get everything done on time!

We each recorded our individual reactions based on our know-how.
Jessi discussed some of the criticisms of the movie's translation of the book, Katie listed some of the important plot points of the book that were not included in the movie, Will explained his reaction as a viewer who has not read the books, and I pointed out some of the technical aspects of the filmmaking that helped the book translate properly into the movie.

We also recorded our voice-over for the summary section of the project!

To-do list complete!

Week 3 Post 2 - Katie EVERYONE READ

Hey lovely group(: We did so good yesterday and got so much done!

So we decided to meet on Sunday night when everyone is back. Would 630-ish be good for everyone?
The only things that are really left to do is work on the portfolio (which jess started this morning), right the 1-page thing, and do our works cited. I started on mine this morning. Cite anything we might use or have already used! Cite your pictures, graphs, information, quotes, trailers, interviews, everything! Post it on the blog or I'll get it from y'all on Sunday and compile it into our works cited page.

Good work everyone! We're almost done! And Will- sorry for kicking you out of the library hahah

Week 3 Post 2 - Jessi

okay, we made a lot of progress today guys!   Way to go!  Now that we each have our parts recorded, we can begin editing.  We have the summary recorded.  Will,  Katie and i just split it in half and turned it in so we could go ahead and begin the video and get that part done.  Abbey if you can go ahead and start piecing it all together, that would be wonderful.  If there is anything I can do to help, let me know.

Also, Katie and I went to the AKL Hunger Games today.   We got a couple of interviews and some footage of the games.  We also can do another recording recapping those if we need/want to add a segment about the social aspect of the Hunger Games into our video.  Depending on how much time our video already takes up, we can decide, but Katie and I do have the information and clips to do that with.

I am also going to start putting names and things together for the credits.  In the credits we need to put the names of the people we interviewed (if we dont know the names, idk what to do, maybe have to redo interviews with people we actually know) , the names of the websites out information is coming from and so on.   I can begin that and each of you will have to add what i do not know.

Also, we will need a work cited page.  Katie has already done our summary, so Will maybe you could use my credits to put together an MLA work cited page to go in our portfolio?? Please :)

Any work you have that is a document or anything that we have a hard copy of can be brought when we meet again to be put in the portfolio.  We have started it already!  :)

Cannot wait to see the finished product.  Keep up the good work guys!  We are in the home stretch!!!  :) :) :)

wEEK 3 pOST 1 -kATIE

So for our personal interviews I am going to talk about how they did good with translating the book in the time that they had but here were some problems...
Hard to translate 374 pages into a movie, even one that is 2.5 hours
Wolves's eyes: in the book they tricked the last 3 players into thinking that these muttations (wolves) were
the tributes that had died during the game by having eyes that looked remarkably the same
and a color representing the district-this was VERY disturbing because it showed the ability of
the capitol to CONTROL EVERYTHING INCLUDING EMOTION (didnt happen in movie)
Peeta's Leg: in the book peeta did not recover so quickly from the wound cato inflicted on his leg, he was
holding katniss back but she would not leave him (important) and the mutt wolves almost got him.
by the end of the book, he loses his leg and gets a prosthetic one
Alliance with Rue: rue has been following her around but they never hurt eachother. when katniss is in the tree
being hunted by the careers, points out the trackerjacker nests. when katniss wakes up from
the tracker jacker poison, rue is the one that has kept her alive, they form alliance, are
together working on plans, rue gets killed, much more emotional in the book, people in
the movie didnt understand/know that it was supposed to be heartwrenching
Relationship with Peeta: didnt show how their relationship forms, didnt really show his real love/her confused
                                     love.

TOO MANY CHARACTERS TO DEVELOP IN SUCH A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME, DIDN'T SEE THE IMPORTANCE OF RELATIONSHIPS

Week 2 Post 1 Will

I recorded all of the interviews tonight. I just haven't figured out how to get them in to the blog yet.

Week 3 Post 1 - Jessi

Okay, so today's meeting with rozelle went well. :) We also made progress with interviews!

All the interviews you did after class be sure to email to abbey!

Also, you can post them on here! To show the work you have done :)

For Thursday, be sure you have what your gonna talk about. I'd like for it to be posted here so we can be sure none of us will be covering the same topics.

Our project is due Tuesday, A week from today. We can do this!!!

Meet at the library, Thursday, 2:00 sharp. Progress MUST be made.

Katie, if you haven't already (I forgot to check to see if it was on here) then go ahead and post our review! :)

Week 2 Post 2- Abbey

Once again, so sorry I missed the meeting last week! This week is production for my Studio class, so I've been going crazy trying to find everything for our show.

Anyways, I've been thinking about Jessi's set up.
I think for the intro, we can use some footage from the trailer, but in order to avoid copyrights we can either voice over it ourselves or cut out some of the audio from the trailer.

Then when we want to talk about our thesis, we can use clips of interviews with the author, Suzanne Collins, and possibly the director. Same voice-over thing.

For the individual segments of us, we can go to the photography studio in the library. It's a small room, but it's got a good backdrop, and we can record in there quickly and easily without being interrupted.

We can use tomorrow to interview the general public, and once we know the general opinion, we can come to our conclusions and film our individual segments on Thursday. Would that work with everyone?

Week 2 Post 2 -Katie

When we met with Prof. Battista, he made a good point. He told us that we had a good idea but what was our approach or main point of this review?

Made the movie enjoyable for ALL audiences
-Those who read the book
-Those who did not read the book
-Men and women
-People of all ages

Right?
(: Keep up the good work!

Week 2 Post 2 - Jessi

Okay, so I'm thinkin this should be the layout of our video.

First, a very suspenseful intro of the movie. Maybe 30 seconds or so.

Then, we take about 30 more seconds to tell the audience about the "authors purpose" and our thesis.

From there, we use examples showing the social hype. The posters everywhere, the people who haven't watched it have still heard of it. The money it made. I expect that to last from 30-45 seconds.

Then we go to the people who have saw it. Each one of us (me Katie abbey and will) will do a segment (30 seconds each) critiquing it. Abbey, you can tell about the camera work. Will, you can talk about seeing it without reading the books. Katie you and I will pick up the rest.

Here we add the general public interviews and their opinions. This can be as long as we would like.

Lastly our credits can roll as we do a short team Peeta Team Gale part justto add some fun.

Hope this gives us a better starting point for Tuesday. My timing may be way off, but at least we know where to begin.

Week 2 Post 1- Abbey

Okay I've got a few things here.
First, I visited whatdoestheinternetthink.net for a little perspective, and overall everything seems positive.

This website surveys most major sites to take its data from, so overall things seem pretty positive. I really love that Rue's actress has a 100% positive response.

Also, I found a video about the issue of Rue's ethnicity. A woman is asking her ten year old son who is reading the books what he thinks Rue's ethnicity is. Very interesting.

Week 2 Post 1 - Jessi

These photos i thought would be useful for the following reasons:
the audiences reply when they found out Rue was played by a black character
The who scene of Rue's death

A unique segment we could do about the two teams and the audiences opinion. Maybe as the credits are rolling
How the actors fit their roles.
 Just for filler space :)
When we compare the social hype of this movie with the Twilight movies.  :)

Week 2 Post 1 - Katie

Alright, so as I was working my NINE hour shift on Saturday, I had some down time and decided to get some ideas together. Here it goes! And feel free to make changes to ANYTHING this was just so that we could get a start.

Intro Artist's Thesis/Hope-To turn a best-selling novel into a movie without turning off fans of the book or
                                         eliminating any audience groups.
Group Thesis (Final decisions of quality)- As a group, we believe that "artist" did an excellent job of
translating the book to a movie.

Summary
The Hunger Games is set in a futuristic setting of what was once North America. The country, Panem, is split into 12 fenced-off, isolated districts and one totalitarian rulin g city, the Capitol. Each year, to remind the districts of their failed rebellion attempt 75 years earlier and the complete power of the government, the Capitol hosts the Hunger Games, in which a boy and a girl between the ages of 12-18 are selected from each district in lottery fashion to fight to the death. When Katniss from District 12 volunteers to take to take the place of her 12-year old sister, the audience follows her on her journey through the pre-game ceremonies, beauty pageant-style interviews, game training, and into the 74th Annual Hunger Games, finding themselves rooting for her in this televised, child-killing ritual.

Analysis
Camerawork:?
Costumes: Good job capturing the importance of the different outfits. (ex. shows situations, rebellions, etc.)
Author: Suzanne Collins was on set during the production to make sure important aspects were translated.
Director:Gary Ross
Distributor :Lionsgate
Rating: PG13

Problems Audience Had + Responses to Problems:
1) Movie should've been R-Rated and added more violence from the book.
When a series becomes famous and a movie is made out of it, producers want to do anything they can to   make sure that it reaches as large of an audience as possible. As Scott Danielson (movie critic) said, "no
studio executive in their right mind is going to spend 100 million dollars on a teenphenomenon and then risk limiting the audience".
2) Kids shouldn't watch this because of violence and fear they will get wrong message
In the movie: violence is never celebrated, always somber tone when death occurs, Katniss tries to keep others alive and only kills in self-defense, those that do take on the role of ruthless killer are made to look like psychopaths
3) Movie is a let down
Even with a 2 1/2 hour movie, 300 pages of text cannot be put into a movie.
Also, things will be different than you expected, images will always be different in your head then on-screen. Think about it this way, not everyone will imaging the same thing when reading the book so it can't be shown just like you pictured it.
4) Important parts of the story were missing. (ex. Peeta's leg, Mutts eyes)
5)"[The] Hunger Games painted a raft of characters it couldn't support, leaving deaths that should be heartrending more as a pause in the action. And while Katniss and Peeta are emotionally layered in the novel, here they are simpler souls, two-thirds of a rickety love triangle". (movie critic-cant think of name atm)

Week 1 Post 2 Will

I found a pretty good article on how the book differs from the movie

http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/1293140/how_does_the_hunger_games_movie_differ_from_the_book.html

I think we could use these points in our interviews to see how others feel about the differences

Week 1 Post 1 -Katie

I have read the book and seen the movie. I have formed my opinion on both. There were a lot of details I noticed in the movie that will be very helpful to our review. I have also been reading different reviews online. I will be able to discuss ideas in class. Can't wait to get started! (LOVE this series)

Week 1 Post 1- Abbey

Wow, the blog looks great! Good job Jessi!

I saw the movie last weekend with my friends for the first time. I particularly noticed a lot about the camera work and how it affected the feel of the movie. I also enjoyed the costuming, which suited the dystopian society of the Capitol perfectly. I think I will try to go see it again soon, so that I can look for more details.

I've found the official trailers.

I am going to download them from keepvid.com this afternoon!

Week 1 post 1- Will

I finally saw the movie and will be able to discuss the project in class. The other day I was kind of lost as to what was going on. I made sure I paid close attention to camera manipulation and the costumes of all the characters. I can also input my opinion of the movie without having read the book since I'm the only one who hasn't. Can't wait to discuss tomorrow!

Week 1 post 2 - Jessi

For anyone posting on this blog, We each have to do two posts a week.  So for ease of Grading set the title to be which week and which post with your name.  Such as i have done for the first two examples.  :)  Then add anything you have found or have done to help with our project.  Even if we may never use it, add it here to show the effort you have put into the project.  :)

Also, I have already read the book and seen the movie.  I have pulled together my opinion as well as found a review from a high school teacher in lower Alabama.  She required all of her students to read it and do a book review on it.

Week 1 Post 1 - Jessi

I created the google and blogging account.  :)  And now I am trying to figure out how to invite other people to post on it.  :/
